A perennial culinary herb, sage adds texture to herb and flowerbeds as well as containers. Where winters are colder than zone 4, grow as an annual or try growing it indoors for winter. In spring through summer, purple, red or white flowers attract birds, bees and butterflies. Delicious fresh in salads or stuffings or dried for savory holiday dishes, but for cooking, clip the leaves before flowers appear for best flavor. Also do not apply chemical fungicides or insecticides on or near the plant.
