A deciduous tree known as the common fig and is prized for its fruit that ripens from August to September. The plant is self-fertile. Adapts to light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, although figs prefer well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soils. It cannot grow in the shade. Needs to be protected from frost conditions. Feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer formulated for fruiting fig trees during its growth, bloom and fruiting periods, but withhold feeding when dormant. Also decrease watering when the tree is dormant.
